One of the most common conversations we come across here at Colorado Multisport, is "how much Sodium do I need?" We can finally answer this question intelligently for our athletes, and set them up for success. We offer a unique test that measures sodium concentration in the sweat, which is translated to the sodium requirements of each individual. Amazingly, this simple test is conveniently done without exercising, therefore, you don't even need to break a sweat (pun intended)! CMS will be one of 2 places in the US to commercially offer individual sweat composition testing to athletes. Unlock your potential today. Check out this article on 303 Triathlon about our test.
Every person is unique in their nutritional needs, so why should each person follow generalized nutrition advice that only leads to more experimentation? Using technology that was originally developed for use in the diagnosis of certain inherited diseases in children, we can now measure the key variable (sodium concentration lost in sweat) that determines each individuals specific electrolyte needs. This is very important because research has shown that electrolyte loss via sweating can vary up to 8 fold between individuals under the same conditions, or even 13 fold under the same conditions when sweat volume is factored in. Therefore, a general guideline may work well for some, but will not even be close for others. Do you want to be left cramping on the side of the road?
|Electrolyte Typical daily intake (mg)||Typical absorption efficiency||Typical loss per liter||Losses in liters of sweat to be deficient||Deficiency possible by sweating|
Each person’s sweat composition is relatively fixed over their lifetime genetically, so completing one test should be sufficient for most athletes. There will always be some trial and error with various nutrition items, hydration needs, and situational strategies. Nutrition strategies become more meaningful when this key variable is understood.
Check out the video below to understand more about the sweat test itself. Plan to spend roughly an hour to complete the test and talk through the results as they relate to you. The video showcases one potential nutrition product, but we can help match you to the products that work best for you.
Includes the sweat composition results, sodium recommendation, and short hydration consultation to outline strategies for before, during, and after training/racing.

“After years of competing and thinking I had my nutrition dialed, I decided to make sure I was taking in the correct sodium levels. Turns out I was not even close and those long days where I was fading was not because I wasn’t eating enough. I just wasn’t staying hydrated due to lack of having enough sodium and fluids. Thanks for setting me up for my first Long Distance Tri PR in years.”
